Title: Exploration on the Cultural Identity Path of Overseas Chinese: An Investigation Centered on Overseas Chinese Alumni of Lingnan University
Abstract: This study examines the return of third-generation overseas Chinese from North America to Lingnan University for Chinese education in the early 20th century, exploring the unique role of overseas Chinese education in Sino-Western cultural exchange and the construction of identity in multicultural contexts. Through in-depth analysis of case studies of the Li, Liu, and Seto families, this paper reveals the historical significance of Lingnan University as a “cultural bridge”, and elaborates on how overseas Chinese communities sought balance and reconstruction of cultural identity between “diaspora” and “return”. The study finds that Lingnan University's overseas Chinese education not only provided an anchor for cultural identity for the children of overseas Chinese but also became an important link connecting overseas Chinese with Chinese culture. This research attempts to engage in dialogue with the overseas Chinese historical studies of Philip A. Kuhn and Wang Gungwu, and to re-examine the cultural significance of overseas Chinese education within the theoretical framework of globalization and localization.
